What if you could only have one bike? That's the case for J. and L., who are living the #Vanlife dream in their custom-built Sprinter. As they travel around the country they found themselves wanting versatile and low-maintenance bikes with neutral handling and the smoothness to tame any surface.
The John Day made their shortlist, and ultimately won out; the only question was how best to equip the bikes for their lifestyle. The concept of a belt-drive 14-speed gearhub system had instrigued J for some time, and with the John Day's belt-drive friendliness he decided now was the time to see what the fuss is all about.
After some consultation we built the bikes around the concept of being low-maintenance road/gravel bikes for now with the option to do loaded touring by just adding bags.
Let's check out a few highlights-
The wheels are built with tubeless-compatible rims (Mavic MTB rims for him, Velocity Ailerons for her) and fitted with Clement MSO 40mm tubeless tires, which are decently fast on the road and surprisingly grippy on dirt.
Braking power is supplied by TRP Hylex road hydraulic brakes.
...and of course the Rohloff Hub with Gates Carbon Drive belt. We use a PF-30 Bottom bracket on the John Day just for this type of situation, which allows us to fit an eccentric Bottom Bracket in order to adjust belt (or chain) tension.
Rofhloff Speedhubs are renowned for their durability by long-distance touists the world over. They can be ridden for tens of thousands of miles with no maintenance but the occasional oil change for the lubricating oil inside.
Such a low-maintenance system is complimented by the Carbon Drive belt, which runs for thousands of miles and does not require lubriation. Cleaner and quieter than a chain, it's a great fit for gearhubs.
All in all we were very pleased with the way these bikes turned out, and wish their new owners thousands of happy (and low-maintenance) miles in the coming years.
