John Day

Handmade in Portland, Oregon

Frameset $4250 / Completes from $6145

The John Day is named for its favorite playground; a scenic region of Oregon laced with thousands of miles of gravel roads.

We have distilled of all our experience with the Elwood, Audi Duo and Firewood endurance bikes into this lightweight bike to tame the vibration of riding gravel, which of course makes it the best endurance bike we've made, the difference between the two activities being primarily tire size.
But the JD is much more than just smooth; it's engineered to achieve the optimal balance between smooth and stiff, or Total Ride Quality on pavement or gravel. It's ideal for difficult endurance rides like Ride the Rockies;  447 miles long with 32,000 feet of climbs… and descents, where front triangle stiffness is critical. The all-road geometry features a long wheelbase and a comfortably tall head tube so you can enjoy the scenery without veering off into it...until you want to.
So, what else is different?
  • The flat and wide longbow seat stays are of laminated woods selected to optimize vibration damping and stiffness.
  • The chain stays are hollow for less weight.
  • The seat post diameter is 27.2 mm for maximum compliance.
  • The curved top tube is retained for its contribution to smoothness, but widened to increase lateral stiffness and further tapered to reduce weight.
  • The down tube has been increased in width and decreased in height to enhance vertical compliance, increase lateral stiffness and reduce weight.
  • The bottom bracket is a PF30 for increased frame stiffness.
  • Integrated headset and tapered head tube for increased frame stiffness.
  • Thru axles front and rear for increased stiffness.
  • Longer wheelbase for better stability and increased vertical compliance.
  • Disc brakes for increased stopping power on long descents with no concern about overheating rims or damaging carbon wheels by overheating.
  • Maximum tire size: 700x40
